An attacker could use the c.ps1 script to copy the SAM file into a directory on the computer. The script would then try to crack credentials stored on the computer. The Copy-VSS tool assists in cracking the passcodes used by the computer.
The information in the SAM file may contain valuable information about the user. The attacker may be able to retrieve the user's sensitive information, such as the user's work email address, name, and telephone number.
This proof of concept invokes the web service described in the Appendix, which requires the attacker to input a requestor's XACML profile, and then accepts or denies that request based on the contents of that profile. The request is asserted to the web service in the form of a XML message. The response of the web service is expected to be in the form of XML.
The proof of concept provides the attacker with an endpoint to submit XACML requests to. A request message is included in the request to effectively deny the request based on the contents of the XACML profile that the attacker has sent to the endpoint.
As with the web service in the Appendix, the request and response are XML messages. The responses do not contain SAM files, and therefore cannot be exploited using the script that contains them.
The proof of concept uses the same rule referenced on the command line to determine whether the computer is communicating with a legitimate web service. The request includes the computer's canonical hostname in the HTTP request's Host field. The web service processes the request, just like the web service described in the Appendix, and asserts whether the computer is communicating with an unknown host or not.
A PowerShell script named c.ps1 appears to be a clone of an open source tool called Copy-VSS, part of a suite of penetration tester tools named Nishang. The Copy-VSS script permits an attacker to copy the SAM file, which an attacker could use to retrieve and crack passwords saved on the computer. d2c66b5586
