The term basic block is also used to refer to a block of code without any form of call, and execution never reaches it. This is mostly used in reference to code that has been optimised out of a program. A classic example of this is when you have conditional code like this:

When the code is disassembled, the basic blocks become apparent. A basic block is a sequence of instructions that always have the same control flow; it is either conditional, unconditional, or runs on its own, and there is no branch or jump out of it.
A great way to get started with a disassembler is to skip ahead to the next section and jump directly into the disassembly for a well known program. Try something simple like a C program that does simple math operations, or a hello world program. Then you can start experimenting with the different options of the disassembler.
Data format conversion is also a very hard problem. It is hard to convert data formats because of the many subtle differences between them. A simple example is a very large number of integers that are stored on a computer as binary, with 2's complement. This does not work for floating point numbers. A more subtle example is a file, which is binary, but uses bytes to represent characters.
