Hatachi Imasuku is a student at Tamiya High School. One day, Tamiya comes across a mysterious notebook online advertised as a "Light-like Death Note". It is just about to expire and she decides to try it out. However, when she uses it, she inadvertently kills her classmate, Watari. Horrified by this, the two part ways and Hatachi keeps the notebook out of fear that she might be at risk of dying. Meanwhile, as Ryuk is near his boredom threshold, he remains awake in the tower following Light with him and it is later revealed Light is not the only human to have the Death Note. Another user who goes by the name "Misa Amane" provides additional information on the Death Note when the two meet, as well as another user named "Kira". Together, they attempt to prevent others from using the Death Note.

Matsuri Tokunaga (Ami Koshimizu (actress)) is a student at Tamiya High School. She confesses to Tamiya that she received a "Death Note". She uses it to gain revenge on her classmate, Watari, who bullied her by killing him. She wants him to suffer the same fate as her. Watari's death brings out Hatachi's feelings for him and she reveals a hidden talent as a poet. She has a crush on him and the two begin to date but Watari has feelings for his teacher Chika. Chika has feelings for him as well.

Misa Amane (Ami Koshimizu (actress)) is a student at Tamiya High School. She has a thirst for knowledge and so she seeks to become Ryuk's servant, signifying her willingness to leave her life on Earth and enter his kingdom. She claims that she can read (and thus use) the Death Note but she is not even a human. Amane tells Hatachi about the "Death Note", ostensibly as a means of scaring her off. However, she later becomes a useful ally to Rasen Madoka, researching for him about her.
