Chariots! is a very quick and fun game. While I didn't have much trouble learning the mechanics, I did find the game to be a bit more tedious in practice due to the lack of interaction with the board. The board is really hard to read, and there is not a good way to distinguish the rim and the inside of the board. A dry erase and a few markers would have made a big difference. To me, that made the game feel more like the winner will be decided by the Race Clock.
Chariots! was a sleeper hit game for me. I was very surprised at the level of engagement. It held everyone's attention, and the game turned out to be incredibly nuanced. I never expected this from a beer and pretzels game. The only thing I wanted to change was the pacing of the game. I wanted more action and less thinking! The game is a quick win for the player who finishes first. I'm looking forward to playing this again with my next group. John is really good at coming up with interesting ideas, and Chariots! is no exception. My only problem with the game is that it feels too much like a Star Trek game. It lacks the character of Chariots of Fire, and quite frankly is missing the feeling of victory that comes with military conquest. I'm looking forward to John taking on the next challenge. I would really love to see more of the Chariot theme added to this game.
