A critical reading of the novel and Joyce's Finnegans Wake would allow one to examine how the dreams that are incorporated into each work are related to the whole text and how the subject of each text relates to its other characters. The emphasis of this dissertation is especially on how issues of subject formation—through the image and consciousness of the Other—play out in the context of the text and how the dream alters the subject's self-knowledge and self-awareness. More specifically, the critical reading of the novel and Finnegans Wake will provide evidence for how the issue of subject formation is related to Chinese society and culture. Both novels, in addition to probing the subject's unconscious motivations, focus on the relationships between social logic, self-knowledge, and subjectivity formation by examining how one can define herself in terms of the Other. The main mode of communication in both works is the internal monologue. By understanding what it means to communicate through the Other, one can appreciate what both texts are about. Through dream language in The Dream of the Red Chamber and the paratext and paratextual allusions of Finnegans Wake, the subject's consciousness can be located and represented by the Other.
The first chapter of this dissertation uses psychoanalytical theories to interpret the dream language in the novel and to understand its protagonist Bao-yu's practices in deceiving his mother and his cousin Bao-chai. The second chapter extends the psychoanalytical theories of dreams and femininity and applies them to the text of Dream of the Red Chamber.
